A young child died after a two-car crash Friday afternoon in Cupertino, and the driver of the other car was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said.  Gross vehicular manslaughter is a felony charge for a death caused by driving with gross negligence, meaning far more careless than ordinary.

Deputies were called shortly after noon on Nov. 6 to North Tantau Avenue and Pruneridge Avenue, near Apple's headquarters.  A woman and the child were seriously hurt and taken to a hospital, where the child died, the office said.  The other driver, a man, had minor injuries and was treated and released.

The office's crash reconstruction team investigated, and Tantau Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours.  The man has been arrested, not charged; the District Attorney decides whether to file charges.  The office has not released the names of anyone involved.

Witnesses can call the sheriff's crash team at 408-868-6637.
