San Jose police arrest nine in burglaries where a car was driven into businesses

Detectives used license plate cameras to link three June break-ins, police said.  Three suspects were minors at the time.

San Jose police have arrested nine people they suspect in a string of burglaries in which thieves drove a car into businesses to get inside, the department announced Monday, according to its news release as reported by KTVU.

Detectives linked three June break-ins to the same group, police said:  in the 1600 block of Capitol Avenue, the 400 block of Blossom Hill Road and the 1900 block of Camden Avenue.  They used the city's automated license plate readers, cameras that log the plates of passing cars, to identify the suspects.

Three of the nine were 17 or younger when the crimes happened, police said.  Detectives got arrest warrants for all nine.  Five were arrested in June and four on Oct. 15.  The adults were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail and the juveniles into Juvenile Hall.  None has been convicted.

The plate cameras are under scrutiny at City Hall after the department fired an officer who, police say, misused the system, as the Daily News reported Nov. 2.
