San Jose police switch to 12 patrol districts on Sunday
Officers will cover whole districts instead of fixed beats, a change the department says should cut response times.
San Jose police will redraw the city's patrol map on Sunday, Nov. 8, going from 16 patrol districts to 12, the department announced Wednesday. The department set that date in a February memo to the City Council.
Officers will no longer be tied to small fixed areas called beats. Instead, each district's team will cover the whole district. The most urgent calls, Priority 1 and 2, will go to the closest available officer using GPS, and sergeants will hand out lower-priority calls, the memo says.
The department says the old map no longer matched its staffing, leaving some beats empty for whole shifts. The new lines keep neighborhoods such as Little Saigon, Evergreen, Alviso and the Rose Garden in one district each.
Residents can enter an address on the city's interactive map to see their new police district and compare old and new boundaries.
