A man died and two women were badly hurt late Sunday when a Honda going the wrong way on State Route 87 in San Jose hit an SUV, according to a California Highway Patrol press release reported by KTVU.
The Honda, driven by a 37-year-old San Jose resident, was heading the wrong way in the northbound lanes north of Capitol Expressway when it struck a Rivian, the CHP said. The Rivian's driver, 79, and her passenger, 74, both San Jose women, were taken to a hospital with major injuries.
CHP officers were called at 11:05 p.m. Nov. 1. At 11:31 p.m., the agency's San Jose office posted that all northbound lanes north of Almaden Expressway were blocked and drivers were being sent off at Curtner Avenue. It posted that all lanes were open again at 1:33 a.m.
Officials have not released the names of the three people involved. The CHP said it was not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a part.
Highway 87, also called the Guadalupe Parkway, links south San Jose with downtown and the airport.
