SAN FRANCISCO - Dropbox said in a news release Thursday it plans to buy Tigris Data Inc., which sells object storage built for AI workloads, and is launching DBX Agent Cloud for companies building AI apps.  Object storage is the bulk cloud "warehouse" that holds training data, model files, images and video — the same kind of buckets many developers already use on Amazon S3, Dropbox said.  Tigris, founded by former Uber engineers, runs S3-compatible storage across clouds without locking customers to one provider or charging egress fees, Dropbox said.

San Francisco-based Dropbox, with more than 700 million registered users, said the deal would speed its push into AI infrastructure after nearly two decades running storage at scale.  DBX Agent Cloud starts with standalone object storage that works with familiar S3 tools; filesystem and content-processing features are planned next.

The release did not disclose price, cash-or-stock terms, a premium, required approvals, an expected close date or any layoffs.  Dropbox warned the deal may not close on the expected timeline or at all.
