OMAHA - Winston Hall, a 78-year-old Army veteran of the Vietnam War who lives in Elkhorn, pedaled about 2,000 miles across the country this year, according to the November issue of New Horizons, the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging's newspaper.

Hall, a Lincoln native, was chosen from among 400 veterans for a 3,700-mile coast-to-coast ride organized by Warrior Expeditions, a national veteran-led nonprofit that uses outdoor trips to help veterans move from wartime to civilian life, writer Andy Bradley reported. Six veterans left the U.S. Capitol on May 21; Hall was the oldest and the only Vietnam veteran.

The riders followed the Great American Rail Trail. Hall entered Nebraska over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and rode through Lincoln, Norfolk and along the Cowboy Trail before heat, humidity and wildfire smoke led him to stop near Valentine. He plans to ride the remaining 1,700 miles next May.

Firefighters and an Iowa VFW club offered places to stay along the way, he told the paper. “It's all about the opportunities and experiences,” Hall said.
