Schools ask students to wear orange Wednesday for Unity Day
Los Alamos Public Schools marks National Bullying Prevention Month on Oct. 21.
LOS ALAMOS - Los Alamos Public Schools is asking students to wear orange on Wednesday, Oct. 21, for Unity Day, which the district describes as the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month.
The district homepage says the orange is a sign of acceptance, inclusion, and belonging, and that any touch of orange counts, as does a kind word. It points families to the Stop, Walk and Talk steps taught in schools: say stop in a calm, clear voice, walk away, and talk to a trusted adult.
The district offers a family prompt, asking how someone made a student feel welcome this week, or how the student uses those three steps. It says counselors, teachers, and other staff are available and asks families to contact their school if they want to talk. The page points readers who want the national description to pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unity-day.
