USU NourishEd wraps Cache County Senior Center lessons with local produce
LOGAN - Utah State University dietetics interns are finishing a NourishEd series at the Cache County Senior Center that pairs weekly nutrition lessons with free food from Utah farms, according to a Nov. 6 USU Today feature.
USU Today says the Hunger Solutions Institute program, brought to Cache County by Extension nutrition specialist Carrie Durward, also ran at an elementary school. Interns including Joni Marrow and Billie Gray lead label-reading and cooking lessons; the feature states the program bought about 8,000 pounds of fresh produce and other products for sites in eight Utah counties this year, including First Frost Farm in Nibley, Cox Honeyland in Logan and Johnson Family Farms in Cache County, funded through a Local Food Procurement Assistance grant administered by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.
Why this matters
Older adults and schoolchildren in Cache County get hands-on nutrition teaching and local produce through a USU Extension partnership that ties classrooms to nearby farms.
