Cleveland County and HUGS Street Ministry collect coats through Dec. 31

NORMAN - Cleveland County and HUGS Street Ministry are collecting coats and other warm clothing through Dec. 31 for people experiencing homelessness this winter, according to a county news release. The drive began this week.

Residents can donate new or gently used coats, jackets, gloves, scarves and other warm clothing at five drop-off sites: the Cleveland County Office Building, the Cleveland County Election Board, the Cleveland County Health Department, The Well and the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. The release does not list addresses or hours for the sites. HUGS will pick up the items periodically and distribute them, the release said.

This is the third year of the county's partnership with the ministry and the ministry's eighth annual winter coat drive. More than 640 coats and hoodies were handed out through the partnership last year, according to the county.

"This partnership is special because our community comes together to support those in need of warm clothing," said Cleveland County Treasurer Tammy Richards.

County commissioners had a memorandum of understanding with the ministry for collection bins on county property on their Oct. 26 agenda; the board's online meeting record does not yet show its action on the item.
