Public celebration tonight marks $126,000 solar system at Thunderbird Clubhouse

The City of Norman event starts at 5:30 p.m. at 1251 Triad Village Drive and is open to everyone.

NORMAN - A public celebration of a newly finished solar panel system at Thunderbird Clubhouse begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the clubhouse, 1251 Triad Village Drive, according to a City of Norman news release issued Oct. 20. The city says everyone is welcome.

The system cost $126,000 and is expected to cover more than 60 percent of the clubhouse's current electricity use, said Michele Loudenback, the city's manager of the Division of Environmental Resilience and Sustainability, in the release.

EightTwenty LLC sponsored the installation as a nonprofit community project under its partnership with the city on the Norman Solar Initiative, a group purchasing program that started in 2024 to lower the cost of solar panels for residents and businesses.

Thunderbird Clubhouse, established in 1990, works with adults recovering from mental illness. The program will include agency speakers, refreshments and information about the city's sustainability work, the release says.
