Champaign County committee backs adding a deputy; leaders' memo puts budget gap at $759,000
The deputy recommendation goes to the full County Board, slated for Oct. 22; the committee took no action on the budget.
URBANA - The Champaign County Board's Committee of the Whole on Oct. 13 approved, on a voice vote, a recommendation that the full board raise the sheriff's authorized sworn staffing from 58 to 59, including the sheriff, according to the action report and the county's meeting video. No roll call was taken. The added position would collect and transport cash three times a week, the agenda packet shows.
The committee took no action on next year's budget; it removed an item on fiscal 2027 budget scenarios from its agenda after a member, citing low attendance, moved to put the discussion off for a week, the video shows. A memo in the packet, dated Oct. 9 from Finance Chair Elly Hanauer-Friedman, Vice-Chair John Farney and Board Chair Jennifer Locke, says the general fund faces a deficit of nearly $1.1 million, offset by a $337,000 surplus in a public safety sales tax fund, for a net gap of $759,000. The memo says one-year temporary fixes will not close the structural deficit.
The committee also forwarded data center and nondisclosure agreement measures. Draft documents in the packet are dated Oct. 22.
