Suffield Street to close for about 48 hours Oct. 19-20 for railroad crossing replacement

SUFFIELD - The railroad crossing on Suffield Street will be replaced Oct. 19-20, closing the area near the crossing to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for roughly 48 hours, according to a Town of Suffield notice posted Oct. 9.

A detour will be posted to route through traffic around the work, the notice says. Businesses and homes along Suffield Street will stay accessible. The town asks drivers to use caution on the detour and to allow extra travel time.

The Connecticut Southern Railroad is paying for and carrying out the project with its contractor, replacing the existing crossing with all-new material. The state Department of Transportation's Office of Rail is helping coordinate with the public, and the work is being coordinated with the town, first responders and bus and transit providers, according to the notice.

The notice says extreme weather could change the schedule.
