Los Gatos-based Netflix tests an AI tab that suggests shows by mood

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, is testing a new tab in its TV app that uses AI to pick shows and movies by mood, the company said Tuesday.

The tab, called AI Discover, is starting with a small group of U.S. members who use Netflix in English on supported TVs.  Netflix said it will reach more members over the coming weeks.  People chosen got an email.  They will see "Discover" with a red gem icon and a "New" label in the menu.

How it works

Netflix already recommends titles based on what you have watched.  AI Discover adds a back-and-forth.  Viewers start from themes such as "Something Light," "Scare Me," "Family Movie Night" or "Quick Watches," then narrow the picks or ask for "Something Different."  A "Tune Your Recommendations" button and a "Don't recommend" option shape later suggestions.  Netflix said "Don't recommend" only affects the Discover tab.

The tab is optional and does not appear on Kids profiles.  Netflix's help page warns that the AI can make mistakes.  The company called the tab a "test kitchen" for new ideas.
