Apple opens its new Siri AI to outside app developers
Any app can now plug into the assistant in test software, though customers will wait a few months.
Apple said Tuesday that any app maker can now connect its app to Siri AI, the Cupertino company's new AI version of its voice assistant. According to Apple's developer news page, the feature is in a developer preview in the test versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS 27.3.
Apps link in through App Intents, an Apple toolkit that lets an app describe its content and actions so the system can use them. Apple says Siri AI can then use personal context, what is on screen and everyday language to, for example, check a delivery, book a reservation or place an order. A new skills feature lets developers bundle several steps into one request.
Apple's own apps, including Mail, Maps, Messages, Photos and Notes, get the same abilities.
Customers get it in a few months, and apps can be submitted to the App Store in the spring. It will not be offered in the European Union on iPhone and iPad or to users under 13. Apple said server-based features have daily limits and expanded access will carry a fee later.
