Stanford men's soccer upsets Louisville 2-1 in ACC tournament opener
Jayden Fitzgerald Boes scored with less than two minutes left, moments after Louisville had tied it, to send the 12th-seeded Cardinal on.
Stanford beat Louisville 2-1 in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) men's soccer tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky., according to the official box score. Stanford, seeded 12th, knocked out the fifth-seeded host in the opening round of the league's postseason tournament, which decides the conference champion.
Victor Fung put Stanford ahead 1-0 in the 43rd minute, off an assist from Joshua Partal; it was his first goal of the season. Louisville tied it in the 87th minute when Emil Thor scored from a Giacomo Zizza assist. Two minutes later, Jayden Fitzgerald Boes scored the winner off a Trevor Islam assist, his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Both teams took 12 shots, but Stanford put seven on goal to Louisville's three. Stanford goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly made two saves, and Louisville's Nathaniel Abraham made five. The game drew 854 fans.
The win lifts Stanford to 9-4-3, and Louisville fell to 12-3-3. The school said Stanford spent four weeks atop the national polls this season under coach Jeremy Gunn, one of only two coaches to win three straight NCAA men's soccer titles, and is chasing its first conference tournament title since 1997.
Stanford next plays on Sunday, Nov. 8, against the winner of No. 4 seed Pittsburgh and No. 13 seed Syracuse, with the higher seed hosting, the school said. The ACC semifinals and final are Nov. 12-15 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
