Stanford men's basketball rallies past Eastern Washington 74-65 for Kyle Smith's 300th win
Freshman Julius Price scored 17 points, and the Cardinal closed on a 10-0 run after trailing 65-64 late.
Stanford beat Eastern Washington 74-65 in men's basketball on Monday night, Nov. 2, at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus, according to the official box score. The season-opening win was the 300th of head coach Kyle Smith's career, the school said, and Stanford's 17th straight win in a season opener.
Eastern Washington led 28-15 with 6:08 left in the first half. Stanford closed the half on a 19-2 run, capped by an Aziz Olajuwon 3-pointer with one second left, to lead 34-30 at the break. The Eagles went back in front 65-64 with 2:45 to play, but Stanford scored the last 10 points, starting with a Nick Townsend layup.
Julius Price, one of three freshmen who played major minutes, led Stanford with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, 11 of them in the second half. Aidan Cammann scored 13, and Olajuwon and Townsend had 12 each. Olajuwon also had six steals, which the school said makes him only the fifth Stanford player since 2005 with that many in a game.
Stanford shot 54.9% and outscored Eastern Washington 44-22 in the paint and 25-15 on points off turnovers, though the Eagles outrebounded the Cardinal 32-26. Alton Hamilton IV led Eastern Washington with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Stanford hosts Oakland on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. and Rice on Monday, Nov. 9, at Maples Pavilion, according to the school.
