San José Public Library's Open Practice: Basketball Book Club meets Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3 to 4:45 p.m. at the East San José Carnegie Branch, 1102 E. Santa Clara St., the library's event page says. The meetup is free. Registration is recommended but not required; the page showed seats still open when checked Nov. 5.
This month's book is American Hagwon, the new novel by Min Jin Lee, author of Pachinko. Cardinal, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing, lists the hardcover on sale since Sept. 29 for $36. Plot in one line from the publisher: a Korean family uprooted by betrayal and the 1997 financial crisis rebuilds across Sydney and Southern California while chasing education and security. You do not have to finish the book to come.
After the talk, the group plays beginner-friendly pickup basketball. Bring water and shoes; playing is optional. Contact Jeff Tibayan at the library, 408-808-3075.
