Two new drugstore mascaras:  L'Oréal's $15.99 'click' Volume Liberté and COVERGIRL's Lash Blast Showstopper

Both promise big volume.  Here is what the brands say, and what a 'clinically proven' claim on makeup does and doesn't mean.

Two of the biggest drugstore makeup brands have new mascaras on shelves this fall, both pitched at people who want fuller-looking lashes.

L'Oréal Paris lists its Volume Liberté Volumizing Mascara at $15.99 on its U.S. website, checked Nov. 7, in three shades:  Blackest Black, Black and True Brown.  The company calls it "the first-ever click mascara":  the cap clicks into the tube to seal it.  It uses an S-shaped fiber brush and is "serum-infused," L'Oréal says, and it is ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested and suitable for contact lens wearers.

COVERGIRL's site labels its Lash Blast Showstopper Mascara "out now."  It uses what the company calls a Double Act brush, mixing molded and fiber bristles twisted 360 degrees, and comes in three shades plus a waterproof version.  COVERGIRL's product page did not show a list price when checked.

L'Oréal says its mascara is "clinically proven to deliver +800% more volume."  That is the company's own claim; it has not published the study on its product page.  Under federal law, cosmetics such as mascara do not need approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they go on sale, except for color additives, though the FDA can act against products that break the law, the agency says.
