Three wide theatrical releases open Friday, according to their distributors.

Godzilla Minus Zero, from director Takashi Yamazaki, opens in North America from TOHO and GKIDS.  The Japanese-language film screens with English subtitles.  It picks up in 1949, two years after Godzilla Minus One, which earned more than $116 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, GKIDS says.  TOHO and GKIDS call it the first Japanese production Filmed for IMAX and say its Japan opening day took in about ¥910 million, a live-action record there.  Check local theater prices.

The Cat in the Hat, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's first full-length feature, also opens Friday.  Bill Hader voices the Cat, sent to cheer siblings Gabby and Sebastian after they move to a new town, the studio says.  Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito and America Ferrera also star.

Wild Horse Nine, written and directed by Martin McDonagh for Searchlight Pictures, opens Friday.  John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play CIA agents sent from Santiago to Easter Island shortly before Chile's 1973 coup.  Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits and Parker Posey also appear.
