Ortiz, Doan and Altwer lead early San Jose council counts as ballot counting goes on
Santa Clara County has counted 306,898 ballots so far. Mail ballots can still arrive through Nov. 10, and results are certified Dec. 3.
Santa Clara County is still counting ballots, and early returns show leaders in all three San Jose City Council races, according to the county Registrar of Voters results page, last updated at 11:21 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. The counts are unofficial.
- District 5: Councilmember Peter Ortiz, 54.99% (5,883 votes); Nora Campos, 44.85% (4,798).
- District 7: Councilmember Bien Doan, 60.14% (6,718); Van Le, 39.65% (4,429).
- District 9: Genny Altwer, 53.57% (8,553); Gordon Chester, 46.24% (7,383).
The county had counted 306,898 ballots, or 28.4% of its 1,080,711 registered voters. That is not final turnout. The Secretary of State reported 358,229 ballots cast in the county through Monday, about 33% of the 1,087,123 voters sent mail ballots. As of 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, the county had not posted an estimate of ballots left.
Measure RTM, a regional transit sales tax, had 54.19% yes in the county. It needs a majority across its five-county district, so the county count alone cannot decide it. For governor, Xavier Becerra led Steve Hilton statewide, 63.9% to 36.1%.
Mail ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 count if they arrive by Nov. 10. Counties certify results by Dec. 3; the state certifies Dec. 11. See our Election Day voter guide.
