The 10th annual Avenida de Altares, a Día de los Muertos festival, runs Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Mexican Heritage Plaza, according to the plaza and Visit San José, the city's tourism bureau. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday for honoring loved ones who have died.
The plaza is at 1700 Alum Rock Ave. in the Mayfair neighborhood. Guests can tour a gallery of community altars, called ofrendas, try art activities, shop an artisan market and get face painting.
Admission is free, and the plaza asks people to RSVP on its website. Most activities are outdoors, with some indoors.
