San Jose speed cameras start mailing warnings Dec. 14; fines of $50 to $500 begin in 2027

The state pilot allows 33 cameras in the city, with at least one in each council district.

SAN JOSE - San Jose's new speed cameras will start sending warning notices Dec. 14 to drivers caught going at least 11 mph over the speed limit, the city announced Oct. 23. Tickets of $50 to $500 will follow in early 2027.

The city's program page says cameras will go in at 33 locations, with at least one in each council district. Fines are $50 for 11 to 15 mph over, $100 for 16 to 25 mph and $200 for 26 mph or more. Going 100 mph or faster costs $500. Tickets carry no points on a driver's license.

Cameras photograph only the rear license plate. Low-income drivers can get reduced fines or community service.

From 2021 through 2025, speeding caused 5,313 crashes in San Jose that killed 41 people and badly injured 265, the city said. San Jose is one of six California cities testing the cameras under a state law, AB 645. Citation money must go to the program or street safety.
