Santa Clara County voters have 111 official ballot drop boxes and 110 vote centers where they can turn in a mail ballot before the polls close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to the California Secretary of State's early voting and drop-off locator, which lists the locations the county Registrar of Voters provides.  The map above shows every one, and the numbered lists below match the map.

A drop box is a locked, official county mailbox for ballots only.  Each of the county's 111 boxes is open 24 hours a day until 8 p.m. on Election Day, the state data shows.  San Jose has 55 of them.  Using one skips the post office, which matters this late:  the Secretary of State advises mailing a ballot at least five days before Election Day to make sure it is postmarked in time.

How to return your ballot

  • Fill out your ballot, put it in the return envelope and complete everything the envelope asks for, including your signature.  The county compares that signature with the one on your voter registration before your ballot is counted, according to the Secretary of State.
  • Drop it in any official drop box in the county by 8 p.m. Tuesday, or hand it in at any vote center during its open hours.
  • Mailing it still works if it is postmarked on or before Nov. 3 and arrives no later than seven days after Election Day, under state rules.  If you mail it on Election Day, the state suggests asking a postal worker inside a post office for a hand-stamped postmark.
  • You can return ballots for other people, such as roommates or family members.  State rules say anyone may return your ballot for you, as long as they are not paid per ballot.

Vote centers

Santa Clara County is one of the California counties that run elections under the Voter's Choice Act.  Instead of one assigned neighborhood polling place, voters can use any of the county's vote centers.  Vote centers are staffed sites where you can vote in person, get a replacement ballot, use an accessible voting machine, get language help or drop off a ballot, the Secretary of State says.

Most of the 110 vote centers are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, the state data shows.  Exceptions are noted in the list.  All 110 offer same-day voter registration, known in state law as conditional voter registration.  It lets people who need to register or update their registration within 14 days of an election, such as a student who just moved to town, register and vote there.  Those ballots are counted once the county verifies the registration.

Track your ballot

California's free Where's My Ballot? service, run by the Secretary of State and powered by a tracking system called BallotTrax, sends email, text or voice alerts when your mail ballot is sent, received and counted.  Sign up at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov.

Locations and hours can change.  Check the Registrar of Voters' drop box finder or the state locator before you go.  Questions can go to the Secretary of State's voter hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683).
