TSU alumna and former department chair endows $100,000 scholarship for Human Sciences students

Dr. Gearldean Johnson, a 1966 graduate who once left school over finances, funds permanent aid in the College of Agriculture

NASHVILLE - A Tennessee State University alumna and former faculty member has established a $100,000 endowed scholarship for undergraduates, according to an Oct. 6 release from the university.

The Dr. Gearldean Johnson Endowed Scholarship will support undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the College of Agriculture's Department of Human Sciences, TSU said. The release does not list other eligibility criteria or how to apply.

Johnson earned her TSU degree in 1966, the university said. She enrolled in 1962, left after two quarters to work and save money because of financial hardship, then returned to finish. She joined the faculty in 1975 and later chaired the Department of Human Sciences.

In the release, Johnson said she had been giving $1,000 to $5,000 a year but decided it was not enough. "We've got to do more to support Tennessee State," she said.

Dr. Chandra Reddy, dean of the College of Agriculture, invited alumni and community partners to join her in supporting students.
