HYRUM - Daren Lentz, a math teacher at South Cache Middle School, has been honored as the Cache County School District's Teacher of the Year, the district announced Nov. 2.

Lentz has taught for 28 years at two schools. A scouting merit badge path led him to his first teaching job, according to the district.

"My job is to be a teacher who cares, and hopefully, that gives my students the courage to put forth effort and take risks," Lentz said in the district's announcement.

South Cache Principal Doug Snow said, "Daren builds great relationships with kids and engages every kid. That is the key to his success."

Lentz said he was honored to represent the district. "I want to be a credit to all the good teachers and good work that is happening in Cache County School District," he said.

Why this matters

The award puts a district classroom teacher in front of the community as an example of the teaching the district wants to reward.
