Norman public safety funding committee sets year-long plan that could end in ballot recommendations
The 13-member committee aims to finish by September 2027.
NORMAN - A City of Norman committee studying public safety needs and how to pay for them plans to spend about a year on the work and may recommend that the City Council put funding measures on a ballot, according to draft minutes of its first meeting.
The minutes of the Oct. 7 meeting of the Ad Hoc Public Safety Planning and Funding Committee, included in the packet for its Oct. 21 meeting, list 13 members present. Members chose Kyle Hurley as chair and Robert Post as vice chair and agreed to meet the first and third Wednesdays, aiming to finish by September 2027.
A staff work plan has the committee review the fire portion of the Matrix public safety study and proposed fire station sites first, then needs such as cybersecurity and siren replacement, then the police portion and a police facilities study, and finally funding options and recommendations to the council.
Bonds and sales tax revenue were early funding ideas, the minutes show.
The Oct. 21 agenda listed discussion of the Matrix study and topics for the committee's Nov. 4 meeting. Its minutes and recording were not on the city's meetings portal as of Thursday afternoon.
