City police oversight board takes up FY2028 budget recommendations tonight
Packet shows Charlottesville police spending rose about 35% from FY22 to FY26; board also plans a schedule to begin case reviews.
CHARLOTTESVILLE - The City of Charlottesville's Police Civilian Oversight Board will take up budget recommendations for fiscal year 2028 at its regular meeting tonight, according to the board's posted agenda. The agenda lists recommendations for both the board's Office of Police Civilian Oversight and the Charlottesville Police Department.
A pre-budget briefing in the meeting packet says no decision is requested on the police budget and is meant to give members shared facts before the department submits its FY28 request. It reports police spending rose from $18.4 million in FY22 to $24.7 million in FY26, about 34.6%, and that overtime reached $1.56 million in FY25, the highest in five years.
The packet puts the oversight office's current FY27 budget at $104,600, down from $125,400 adopted for FY26.
Members are also scheduled to set a timeline for beginning case reviews. Draft minutes from the board's Sept. 10 meeting say reviews will start once Internal Affairs files are digitized in the department's Axon system.
The agenda includes two public comment periods, with a three-minute limit per speaker.
