All Charlottesville City Schools fully accredited and above state's 80-point benchmark

Sunrise Elementary earns the state's top 'Distinguished' rating; some schools are labeled 'Approaching Expectations' under student-group rules, the division says.

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Every Charlottesville City Schools campus is fully accredited, the division announced Wednesday, citing new results from the Virginia Department of Education. All of the division's schools also scored at or above the state's 80-point accountability benchmark, with average scores up 4 to 5 points from last year, according to the announcement.

Sunrise Elementary earned the state's highest designation, Distinguished, for scoring above 90 points, the division said.

Some schools that cleared 80 points still received the lower Approaching Expectations label. The division said state rules require that label when even one student group, such as English learners, Black students, students with disabilities or economically disadvantaged students, is federally identified for targeted support. Those schools will receive added support and qualify for more federal grant money, according to the division.

The division also cited state changes affecting the ratings, including counting student groups as small as 15 students instead of 30, and higher SOL passing scores that begin phasing in in spring 2027. Families with concerns are asked to contact their child's teacher or counselor.
