From the archives, 1950: Gov. Adlai Stevenson set to speak at Champaign high school as Biblical parade planning begins

CHAMPAIGN - Gov. Adlai E. Stevenson was scheduled to speak at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday in the auditorium of the Champaign senior high school, the Illinois Times reported on its front page 76 years ago today, on Oct. 20, 1950. The visit was announced by the county Democratic chairman, and the paper said it was meant to help reelect U.S. Sen. Scott W. Lucas and the party's other state, district and county candidates, with members of the county's Young Democrats serving as ushers.

The same page said the Chamber of Commerce had set its annual Christmas-season Biblical parade for the night of Dec. 7 and hoped to line up 25 to 40 floats. Groups were invited to a planning meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Tilden Hall hotel, where films of the 1949 parade were to be shown, and the paper said a narrator on a floodlighted reviewing stand would explain each scene.
