From the archives, 1922: Union women promised an old-fashioned Halloween party at Labor Hall, masks required

CHAMPAIGN - One hundred four years ago this week, the Women's Label League was getting ready to throw a Halloween party at Labor Hall, and its committee wasn't saying what it had planned, according to a front-page story in the Twin City Review of Friday, Oct. 27, 1922, a Champaign labor weekly digitized by the Library of Congress. This is a historical item.

"It's to be a regular old-fashioned Hallowe'en party with punkins 'n' everything," a committee member told the paper. The party was set for the next Monday night. Organizers kept the program secret, saying it would spoil the fun if people knew in advance.

League members were asked to bring their whole families and several friends and to come in costume if they could, and everyone was to wear a face mask. The paper said the "eats" committee was gathering doughnuts, apples, pumpkin pies and cider, and prizes would go to the funniest costumes. Members of the Co-operative Society and the Co-operative Guild got a special invitation. Admission was free.
