From the archives, 1921: George Huff rallies stadium drive workers for a $2.5 million Illinois stadium
CHAMPAIGN - George Huff told a pep meeting of the stadium drive committee at the Champaign Club that the University of Illinois' planned stadium would be the biggest in the country and cost about $2.5 million, the Twin City Review reported on its front page Oct. 21, 1921, adding that he traced Illini athletics back to football at the old fair grounds and warned that other schools had built stadiums too small for their crowds.
The labor paper said W. E. Ekblaw, also of the university, called the sum modest for a school of Illinois' standing, and that team captains would meet that Friday to finish plans while committees visited outlying towns the following week.
