Security guard shot and killed gunman who killed one person at Sabal Center office campus, Sheriff's Office says
More than 3,200 people were on the campus Wednesday; deputies cleared the buildings within two hours.
TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting a homicide investigation after a shooting Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Sabal Center office campus, 3800 Citibank Center, in which one person was killed and the suspect was shot dead by an armed security guard, according to a Sheriff's Office release issued that night.
The agency's 911 dispatch center began getting calls about shots fired at 12:11 p.m., the release says. The first marked deputy's car arrived within a minute, and deputies went straight into the building.
In the building's cafeteria, a Citibank armed security guard confronted the suspect and shot him, according to the Sheriff's Office. The suspect was taken to Tampa General Hospital at 12:24 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
More than 3,200 people were on the campus when the shooting happened, the release says. The Sheriff's Office sent 367 deputies, including SWAT, aviation, drone and K9 units, and more than 400 law enforcement officers in all were on scene with local, state and federal agencies. The buildings were cleared within two hours.
"This was a tragic situation where a victim was killed by an individual who was intent on killing as many people as possible," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the release.
Hillsborough County's emergency alerts page reported an active shooter in the Sabal Park business area at 1 p.m. and told people in or near the area to shelter in place. At 1:52 p.m. the county opened a family reunification center at Staybridge Suites Tampa East, 3624 N. Falkenburg Road. At 3:27 p.m. the county said the incident was over, the suspect was no longer a threat and the shelter-in-place order was lifted, while asking people to keep avoiding the area as the investigation continued.
The Sheriff's Office has not released the names of the victim or the suspect, or said what led to the shooting. It asks anyone with video of the incident to send it to videos@teamhcso.com or through its online evidence portal. Further updates will come from the Sheriff's Public Affairs Office, (813) 247-8060.
