St. Petersburg and Milwaukee Catholic leaders make World Series wager for charity
Cigars or brats, plus a donation to Catholic Charities, ride on the Rays and Brewers.
ST. PETERSBURG - The Catholic bishop whose diocese includes Hillsborough County has placed a friendly bet with his Milwaukee counterpart on the 2026 World Series, according to an Oct. 23 release from the Diocese of St. Petersburg.
If the Brewers win, Bishop Gregory Parkes will donate to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and send a box of his hand-rolled cigars. If the Rays win, Archbishop Jeffrey S. Grob will ship brats from Bunzel's Meat Market to Florida and donate to Catholic Charities of St. Petersburg. The release does not give donation amounts.
We wanted to make the wager not only fun, but meaningful, by including a donation to Catholic Charities. — Bishop Gregory Parkes, Diocese of St. Petersburg
The diocese says it serves nearly 500,000 Catholics in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties across 74 parishes.
