Santa Barbara’s StarBot launches $7,999 U.S.-made Spark humanoid for homes and schools
The 90-centimeter robot has 22 degrees of freedom; the company also sells a Nova restaurant service robot.
StarBot Robotics of Santa Barbara said Tuesday it launched Spark, a roughly 90-centimeter (about 3-foot) humanoid robot with 22 degrees of freedom, or independently movable joints, priced at $7,999 for homes, schools and developers.
A humanoid is a robot shaped like a person, with a torso and limbs. StarBot said Spark is made entirely in the United States and is aimed at companionship, classroom robotics and open software experiments.
Founder and CEO Yong Wang said the company spun out of the UC Santa Barbara startup scene. Its earlier Nova service robot, listed at $4,999 plus a $499 monthly fee, has been used in restaurants for greeting, ordering and payment, the company said.
“Made in America” and price claims are StarBot’s. Availability and shipping details should be checked on the company site before purchase.
