The City of San José will give away free organic compost and mulch to San Jose residents on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at Emma Prusch Farm Park, according to the city's Environmental Services gardening page.  The self-serve hub uses the park entrance at 1044 Knox Ave.

Residents must bring their own shovels, containers and gloves, the city says.  Each household may take up to 50 gallons — about 10 five-gallon buckets or four reused soil bags — and commercial use is not allowed.  GreenWaste Recovery collects San Jose yard trimmings and turns them into compost, according to its San Jose service page.

Compost is broken-down plant and food scraps mixed into soil as an amendment; the city says it should not be used alone as soil.  Mulch is a layer of wood chips or plant material spread on top of soil to hold water and block weeds.  The Knox Avenue entrance closes at noon, or earlier if supplies run out.
