Council to vote on $1.2 million for winter overnight shelters at Roosevelt and Cambrian
HomeFirst would run 60 beds a night, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., at a community center and a library.
SAN JOSE - The City Council votes Tuesday, Oct. 27, on a grant of up to $1.2 million for HomeFirst Services of Santa Clara County to run the city's winter overnight shelters, according to a memo from Housing Director Erik L. Soliván.
The item is on the consent calendar, a list of routine items passed in one vote unless a member pulls one. The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. The grant runs Oct. 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
The shelters would open nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Roosevelt Community Center, 901 E. Santa Clara St., and Cambrian Branch Library, 1780 Hillsdale Ave. Each site would have 30 beds. Roosevelt can grow to 60 during emergency weather. Cambrian replaces Evergreen Branch Library.
The memo gives no opening date. Last season both sites opened Dec. 1, 2025. They served 250 people; 37% were over 65. The city's website says beds are by referral only and pets are allowed.
Last season's contract was up to $1.22 million.
