Super Micro Computer, the San Jose company better known as Supermicro, said Tuesday that its sales reached a record $19.9 billion in the three months ended Sept. 30.  That is up from $11.1 billion the quarter before and $5.0 billion a year earlier.

Supermicro builds servers, the powerful computers that fill data centers, and sells them ready to install.  Much of its business is AI servers packed with graphics chips, the kind used to train and run chatbots.

Profit up, margin down

Profit was $1.59 billion, or $1.75 a share, against $168 million a year earlier.  Gross margin, the share of each sales dollar left after the cost of making the product, was 12.7%.  That was down from 17.5% the quarter before but up from 9.3% a year ago.  Supermicro's business used $434 million more cash than it brought in.

On Oct. 20 the company had estimated sales of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion.  It now expects $19.5 billion to $21.5 billion this quarter and $72 billion to $82 billion for the fiscal year ending next June.

Supermicro's transformation into a Total AI and IT Datacenter Solution provider continues to accelerate.
