San Jose council asked Nov. 3 to host 2028 Olympic torch relay, with no cap on city costs
Staff estimate city services at $227,700 to $283,250, more with a cauldron ceremony. Mayor Mahan will lead private fundraising.
SAN JOSE - The San Jose City Council will vote Nov. 3 on letting the city manager sign an agreement to host the 2028 Olympic torch relay, a city staff memo says. The item is on the consent calendar, routine items passed in one vote unless a member pulls one.
The city would provide police, traffic control, medical, cleanup and other services to LA28, the Los Angeles Games organizers, at no charge. The agreement sets no fixed payment and no cap on city costs, the memo says.
Staff estimate relay services at $227,700 to $283,250. An optional evening cauldron lighting ceremony would add $365,200 to $419,760. Costs could change because the route and size are not set. Mayor Matt Mahan will lead private fundraising; if it falls short, staff will propose another way to pay.
San Jose's relay date and route have not been announced. Torchbearer spots cannot be sold, and elected officials and candidates cannot carry the torch. The Games open July 14, 2028.
