UNMC names rheumatologist Ted Mikuls its 21st Scientist Laureate

OMAHA - Ted Mikuls, MD, the Stokes-Shackleford Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, was honored Oct. 29 as UNMC's 21st Scientist Laureate, UNMC said in a newsroom post that day. UNMC calls the award its highest honor for researchers.

According to UNMC, Mikuls has been on the faculty since 2002. He started a rheumatology registry at the VA in Omaha that became the national Veterans Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis Registry, and he has been its principal investigator for 24 years. UNMC said the first patient enrolled in January 2003 and that the registry has led to 160 scientific publications.

"Data from the registry has helped a lot of people," Mikuls said in the UNMC post. He added that he was especially glad it had helped early-career researchers get started.
