Nashville Globe, Oct. 10, 1913: AME young people planned an Atlanta congress
From the archives: a page-one notice of a July 1914 meeting for Methodist young people
NASHVILLE - The Nashville Globe of Friday, Oct. 10, 1913, carried a page-one story headlined "Methodists Plan Congress," with a subhead saying young people would hold a meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, according to the front page held by the Library of Congress.
The story said the first young people's congress of the African Methodist Episcopal church would be held in Atlanta from July 8 to 12, 1914, under the church's Sunday School Department and Allen Christian Endeavor League Department. It credited an announcement in two church-published papers, the Southern Christian Recorder and the Allen Christian Endeavor. It named Prof. Ira T. Bryant and Dr. J. C. Caldwell as the departments' secretaries, with headquarters "in this city."
The paper said both men were elected at the church's general conference in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1908.
