From the archives: a Nashville daily's front-page account of a day at the fall races
NASHVILLE - The Nashville Union and American of Oct. 9, 1874, reported on its front page that the previous day's fall race meeting drew fewer spectators than the day before, because word that the opening race would be a walkover kept some people home. The paper says Capt. Franklin's Arizona took the first race, two-mile heats, by galloping over the course alone and collecting $250 for her owner.
In the mile-heat second race, the daily says, Fair Play beat Astral in both heats, with Noll, Kilburn and Joe Nanney behind them. The paper says The Nurse won the third race, a handicap, taking both heats, with Red Jackson second.
