NNSA clears Y-12 to resume binary-alloy production after LANL, Livermore review
Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore experts evaluated the process; manufacturing stays at Y-12.
LOS ALAMOS — The National Nuclear Security Administration on Nov. 5 said it has qualified the Y-12 National Security Complex to resume production of binary alloy after about 20 years, according to an NNSA news release.
Binary alloy is used to make radiation cases that enclose essential components in U.S. nuclear weapons. Experts from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory evaluated the manufacturing process and finished materials before NNSA approved the restart, the release said.
Production is at Y-12. LANL's role in the announcement is evaluation only.
