Bradbury exhibit shows LANL's environmental work, with section co-curated by San Ildefonso

LOS ALAMOS - An exhibit at the Bradbury Science Museum shows visitors how Los Alamos National Laboratory monitors and protects the land it manages, and part of it was co-curated by Pueblo de San Ildefonso, according to laboratory releases.

The lab's Environmental Protection and Compliance division and the museum's exhibits team spent more than a year building the exhibit, which opened Aug. 25. A video wall shows scenery from laboratory land, and visitors can try dating cultural artifacts, simulating Los Alamos wind patterns and building a healthy forest, the releases say.

Through the partnership with the pueblo, the exhibit covers San Ildefonso's culture, history and relationship with the area and the laboratory, using videos of community members and a collection of cultural objects. The laboratory spans nearly 40 square miles, almost 80% of it undeveloped.

"The majority of our visitors will never set foot on LANL land, so we wanted to bring that experience to them," said Patrick Moore, museum director.

The museum, at 1450 Central Ave., is free. It is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
