Sheriff's Office testing license plate readers in short-term Motorola pilot

LOGAN - The Cache County Sheriff's Office has launched a short-term pilot of automated license plate readers with Motorola, according to Cache Valley Daily.

The devices take still snapshots of plates, not continuous video, and are reserved for Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts and serious crimes — not traffic citations or parking tickets, according to Cache Valley Daily.

Data from the pilot may be kept at most nine months under state law and may not be sold or shared with commercial vendors, Cache Valley Daily reported. "This is an opportunity for us to better understand technology that may aid in keeping our communities safe," Sheriff Chad Jensen said, according to the report.

The Cache Citizen filed a records request on Nov. 2 for the agreement, the use policy and the number of cameras.

Why this matters

The pilot puts plate-reader cameras on Cache County roads under terms the sheriff's office has not posted on its own site. The records request seeks the agreement, policy and camera count so residents can see how the system is being used.
