Urbana police investigate shots fired on North Broadway; no one hurt
A driver who went through the police tape at the scene was arrested on preliminary DUI charges.
URBANA - Urbana police are investigating gunfire late Sunday, Oct. 25, that left an occupied vehicle with multiple bullet impacts in the 1000 block of North Broadway Avenue, according to a police release issued Monday.
Officers were sent to the area at about 11:25 p.m. after several reports of shots fired, police said. They found the vehicle and several shell casings. No injuries were reported, and the people in the vehicle could not give officers accurate information about the shooting, according to the release.
While officers were processing the scene, a 22-year-old driver went through the yellow police tape and into the scene, police said. Officers arrested the driver on preliminary charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and using an electronic communication device while driving. The release does not connect the driver to the shooting. Charges are allegations, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The shooting remains under investigation. Police are asking area residents to check surveillance or doorbell camera footage from around that time. Anyone with information can call Urbana police at 217-384-2320 or Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477.
