Fire in Savoy apartment building's mechanical room displaces residents; no injuries reported
The Savoy Fire Department says the Friday evening fire in the 200 block of Green Street stayed in one room. The cause is under investigation.
SAVOY - A fire in a shared mechanical room of a two-unit apartment building in the 200 block of Green Street forced residents out of their homes Friday evening. No one was hurt, according to a Village of Savoy release from the Savoy Fire Department.
A contractor working at the building called 911, and crews reached the scene at 5:11 p.m., the department said. Firefighters put the fire out quickly, and it stayed inside the mechanical room. Everyone known to live there was accounted for and already outside when crews arrived.
Structural damage means residents will be displaced until the building is repaired, the release said. It did not say how many people live there.
The Champaign County Sheriff's Office Specialized Investigative Fire Team is investigating the cause. Personnel from the Tolono Fire Protection District assisted Savoy firefighters.
The department urged residents to keep working smoke detectors on every level of their homes and to practice an escape plan. It offers free smoke detectors, installed, to residents of the village and its contracted areas.
