Urbana police arrest man after armed home invasion on Vawter Street

No one inside the home was hurt, police said; the suspect was taken into custody at a Silver Street apartment without incident.

URBANA - Urbana police responded about 7:14 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, to the 2000 block of Vawter Street after a report of an armed subject, the department said Thursday. Officers learned a suspect had forced his way into a residence and threatened the victim with a handgun before fleeing. No one inside the residence was injured, police said.

Officers received information that the suspect had gone to an apartment in the 1400 block of Silver Street. Police said the man, 20, came out of the apartment voluntarily and was taken into custody without incident. Officers and detectives later searched "the residence" and found a handgun inside, according to the release.

He was arrested on preliminary charges of home invasion and unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon. Formal charging decisions will be made by the Champaign County State's Attorney's Office. All individuals charged are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Police said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information can call Urbana police at 217-384-2320 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers of Champaign County at 217-373-8477.
