State adds three mitragynine-related substances to Schedule I by emergency rule

BATON ROUGE - Three substances related to mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are now on Louisiana's Schedule I list of controlled dangerous substances under an emergency rule, the Louisiana Department of Health announced Monday. The rule applies statewide, including in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The rule names mitragynine pseudoindoxyl; MGM-15, also called dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine; and MGM-16, a fluorinated form, according to the department's declaration of emergency. Health Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein found the placement necessary to avoid an imminent peril to public health, the department said, citing early research that the substances act on opioid receptors.

"These substances have a high potential for abuse and can cause dangerous effects, including dependence and respiratory depression," Greenstein said in the release.

Schedule I covers substances with a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use in the United States. The emergency rule stays in effect for the maximum period the law allows or until a final rule is adopted.
