Sheriff's operation targeting unlicensed contractors ends with 50 arrests
Hillsborough deputies urge residents to check a contractor's license before hiring.
TAMPA - A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office undercover operation aimed at unlicensed contractors led to 50 arrests between June 1 and Oct. 2, the agency announced Oct. 22.
Detectives in the agency's Construction Fraud Unit searched online and social media ads, followed up on tips and complaints from residents, and held undercover meetings, according to the release. The effort was called Operation Bad Builder.
"A contractor's license is more than a piece of paper," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the release.
The sheriff's office urges residents to verify a contractor's license at myfloridalicense.com, ask for proof of insurance, be cautious of ads on social media and online marketplaces, get everything in writing and never pay the full amount up front.
Anyone who believes they were victimized by an unlicensed contractor can call detectives at 813-247-8200.
