OpenAI will shut down the old ChatGPT desktop app on Jan. 30 and plans to merge its Chat and Work tabs

People still using "ChatGPT Classic" on their computers will need to switch to the newer app, which keeps their chat history.

OpenAI will retire its older ChatGPT desktop app, now called ChatGPT Classic, on Jan. 30, 2027, according to a message shown to users when they open it, 9to5Mac reported Monday.  The message says users' full chat history will carry over to the new ChatGPT app.

Why there are two apps

Earlier this year, OpenAI released a new desktop app for Mac and Windows computers that combines three tools:  Chat, for questions and conversation;  Work, which can research, build documents, spreadsheets and websites, and take actions on the web;  and Codex, for writing software.  The original app was renamed ChatGPT Classic and kept working, but OpenAI says some new features appear only in the new app.

Many users found the new app confusing because Chat and Work sit on separate tabs.  OpenAI president Greg Brockman had called the new interface "kind of a mess," 9to5Mac reported.

Chat and Work become one

In an email to users, OpenAI said it will soon begin testing a version that merges Chat and Work, first with a small group of users before a wider rollout, TechCrunch reported.

This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place.

Codex will stay separate.  Rival Anthropic combined its Claude chat and Cowork tools on one screen in September.

Users of the ChatGPT website and phone apps are not affected by the desktop app's retirement.
